Artificial intelligence is rapidly entering psychological practice, creating both meaningful opportunities and significant professional risks. This two-part webinar is designed for psychologists who want to understand how AI may be implemented ethically and defensibly while preserving clinical reasoning, professional judgement, and accountability.

Part I introduces AI as a broad class of professional tools rather than a single platform. Attendees will examine different AI systems, common capabilities and limitations, privacy and consent considerations, professional standards, and emerging expectations around competence and verification. The session will emphasize lower-risk starting points, such as organizing information, improving readability, drafting non-sensitive communication, generating action lists, summarizing appropriate material, and supporting administrative efficiency.

Part II moves from awareness to implementation. Attendees will examine how AI can support conceptualisation, reflective review, report writing, recommendation refinement, documentation, and audience-appropriate communication without replacing the psychologist’s own reasoning.

The webinar introduces cognitive outsourcing as a key professional risk and offers safeguards for maintaining authorship, transparency, verification, and conceptual ownership. Attendees will leave with practical frameworks for deciding when AI use is appropriate, when caution is required, and when AI involvement should stop.

Dr. Mitch Colp, R.Psych

Dr. Mitch Colp is the CEO of Hexagon Psychology and a psychologist licensed across multiple jurisdictions in Canada, and an adjunct assistant professor with several universities.

With years of experience conducting psychological assessments, supervising clinicians, and supporting regulatory organizations, Dr. Colp brings a unique blend of clinical expertise and business acumen.He is a frequent speaker and educator, known for his engaging presentation style and ability to make complex ethical topics accessible and actionable.
MEET THE SPEAKER

Chris Pawluk, R. Psych

Chris Pawluk is a Registered Psychologist with a Master’s degree in Educational Psychology from Massey University in New Zealand. He is currently registered to practice psychology in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, Yukon, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. He has more than 25 years of experience working with children, youth, and adults, including more than 20 years in school psychology roles.

In addition to his clinical work, Chris provides training and consultation to school districts and professional groups across Canada. His recent professional learning focuses on the responsible integration of artificial intelligence into school psychology practice, with an emphasis on maintaining clinical judgement, strengthening conceptualization, and improving professional writing. 

Chris also serves as a Clinical Supervisor with the Werklund School of Education at the University of Calgary, where he supports and mentors graduate students in the Counselling and School and Applied Child Psychology programs.
